This Week on the Ranch

Snow finally hit in quantity this week! And we’re grateful for it even as we plow the driveway and put on the big waterproof winter “muck boots.” Because snow means moisture and a respite from last year’s drought. We hope that it signals that 2022 may be a better year for grass and growing!

And snow also means skiing! The girls got away from the ranch for a day this week to hit the slopes at the local ski area. There, they found nearly 2 feet of fresh powder. As confessed powder fanatics, there were certainly no complaints over the conditions!

The beeves, too, don’t seem to mind the weather. By now they have all grown fluffy fur coats. While we must layer up with wool, down jackets, and scarves, they simply go about their business. The only change we’ve made is to feed them a little extra hay each day to give their bodies more calories to fight against the cold.

-Glenn, Caryl, & Family

Quote of the Week

“Snow was falling,
so much like stars
filling the dark trees
that one could easily imagine
its reason for being was nothing more
than prettiness.”

―Mary Oliver

This Week’s Story From the Ranch: Between Fire and Ice

We were hiking high up in the wilds of the remote North Fork of Hat Creek. It was Sam and Jess, the two summer range riders, and I. We were on a quest to inspect some of the farthest reaches of barbed wire boundary fence on our grazing ranges.

It was a beautiful blue sky day in June, and at this altitude, the mountain said ‘springtime’, and the North Fork was still swollen with melting snow. The wildflowers were a blooming and multicolored rock garden display that went on for miles along the wet margins of the creek.

Snowpack was almost gone from the crags that rimmed this alpine valley, although persistent streaks in couloirs or gullies still remained in white as did leeward drifts along the bare granite ridges of Taylor Mountain, above us.

Thanks again for partnering in what we do!

Glenn, Caryl, cowgirls and cowboys at Alderspring.

We’ve been crafting our pastured protein here in Idaho’s Rocky Mountains for nearly 30 years and delivering it direct to our partners for nearly as long. This is wild wellness, delivered from our ranch to your door.

Your partnership in Alderspring helps us maintain what is unique in today’s agricultural world; Alderspring is a Carbon NEGATIVE and Climate POSITIVE operation. We ran the numbers, and our cows help us capture more carbon in the ground each year on our irrigated pastures than we release!
