This week on the ranch…

We are well into our calving season now, with lots of babies on the ground. Everyone’s doing fairly well, with little intervention from us. These mamas know what and how to do, you see, as they have been doing it on their own for years now. We keep our distance and let them do their thing. We even had our first set of twins, and both are doing well.

Melanie captured some beautiful images of mamas and calves this week while out looking everyone over. We give them time on their own, and let them get used to us before approaching.

Oldest daughter Melanie has been working with some of our younger and more green horses, getting them ready for a summer on the range. Here’s a draft cross named Susie she’s been working with. She was saddled again for the third time and Melanie was very pleased with the progress she made since last spring.

Youngest daughter Maddy took this shot one evening of the horses on pasture.
Another shot from Melanie this week of one of the mamas that’s yet to calve.
Melanie captured this photo at the home ranch just as the sun was setting.
Here’s Mack, Josh’s ranch pup learning the versatility of ranch work.

Jed took this photo over at the Tendoy ranch. Exciting to see these surefire signs of spring, with summer on the way.

Another capture by Melanie this week, of stormy skies.

This week’s story: “On The “Ins and Outs” of Grass Fed Organic Beef”

Dear Friends

This week, I had the privilege of sharing a day with some newfound friends from Chile and Brazil. They were husband and wife. Matias is a PhD candidate doing research on human and animal relationships on ranches in the US and Brazil. One of his major professors is at Oregon State University where he has been residing (rather than Brazil, where most of his professors are).

Stefania is a professor of History, and I often saw her furiously jotting down notes as I told the story of settlement of the Pahsimeroi Valley, and what Caryl and I believe the vegetation was like before we came.

We had a great day together. One of the things we all agreed upon is that in general most Americans have absolutely no idea how their food gets raised. For example, they are completely ignorant about what the day to day life of most finishing beef animals in the US are raised (from 3 to 12 months in a feedlot), and how ours are a complete contrast to that (every day of their life is on pasture).

What it brought to mind is a story I wrote a few years back about the subject. It’s still current, because in the feedlot world, their is nothing new under the sun.

Happy Trails, all.

Glenn
