This Week’s Story: On Making Horse Sense
The forest-fire-smoke-induced-orange ball of sun broke the jagged 10,000 foot spine of the Continental Divide as I braked my truck and trailer to a gentle stop. I had the big gooseneck with 8 horses on board, and I chose the open grassy spot next to a massive crack willow trunk…..

Ranch News

Home at last! It’s the Alderspring crew smiling bittersweet smiles because the cattle are back home from the range. They’ve been gone since April, and all those smaller cattle you see in the picture behind the crew have never experienced the grasses of home. They were born on the range, and the lush green is unlike anything they’ve experienced! Photo by Glenn.

It’s the long thin line of cattle finally arriving along the banks of the Salmon River after a 32 mile walk from the high country. Photo by Glenn.

It’s dogs passed out. The Pyrenees, or big white dogs as we call them, are exhausted from protecting Alderspring stock. They literally travel all night over hill and dale within a mile of the ranch. You can hear their rolling barks echoing from the river bottoms through the night. Meanwhile, the Borders are just exhausted from their normal stock dog herding duties that they engage with. They all take their work very seriously! Photo by Glenn.

They glisten. And there’s no flies on them. Alderspring cattle are certified organic so there’s no chemicals we put on them of any kind….but yet, they don’t suffer from the common maladies of fly pests and poor hair coats found in so many cattle. It’s because they eat for their wellness. Every bite they take is based on their inherent nutritional wisdom, and it’s our job to supply the diversity they need to get it done. Photo by Glenn.

We had a nice rain earlier this week that created some beautiful morning weather that’s not typical of dry Idaho! Photos by Glenn

We’ve had several nice rains this fall which has allowed us to nearly stop irrigation of any kind. Photo by Glenn.
