This Week’s Story: On Trusting…the Cow

Melanie was the one who spotted her. Her tag number was A343–and she was trying to break away from the herd. They had already been horseback trailing the herd of 480 cattle for several hours, covering a few miles of switchbacks on the old logging road that meandered across miles of otherwise unbroken subalpine forest…..

Ranch News

Welcome to the back of beyond…! This was the top of our summer grazing range this year, and when you’re standing on this track and looking up to that alpine glacial cirque you feel like you’re the only person for a hundred miles in Alaska. That top ridge was still streaked with last winter snow 3 days ago. Photo by Glenn.

This is looking to the left, at over 8000 feet in subalpine forest. There was Alderspring cattle on that ridge grazing up off to the right just three days ago. With the collars we have the cattle trained to we were able to keep them completely out of that extensive beaver swamp and bull trout habitat area in the foreground! Photo by Glenn.

It’s Chris, Jed, and Melanie. They’re on the last graze of the High Country range and about to go into an alpine glacial cirque we call the “Lake District.” Photo by Glenn.

Linnaea has quite a litter of Border pups some of which will be inevitably chosen for next year’s range crew! Photo by Glenn.

Some of the Alderspring horse string is already down from the high country. If you look carefully on the horizon at that distant tiny granite dome you’ll see, just below in those dark shadows, where the cattle are on this day, 32 miles by trail away. Photo by Glenn.

The river bottom meadows on Alderpring’s home ranch are full with the production of the wonderful summer season we’ve had! Photo by Glenn.

The Pahsimeroi river flows right through the middle of Alderspring ranch. It runs crystal clear almost all year round providing excellent habitat for trout and migrating Salmon. Permanent pastures don’t allow sediment to run especially when soil microbiomes are rolling in full swing! I think permanent pasture is the cleanest form of agriculture if it is chemical free! I grabbed this shot looking back to where we’ve been. Those distant shadowed mountains on the horizon are the markers of where we started grazing this summer; after we crossed the Salmon River we were at the foot of those peaks in April, 3500 feet below where I snapped this shot. The cattle are about a mile uphill behind me. Photo by Glenn.

I look forward to your stories of life on the range. Yes, I enjoy your meats , but the romance of the range makes it all that more compelling. A friend put me on to you . I’ll never go any place else.

Thank you for your stories and taking the time to put your fans in touch with a life that is at times hard but also very rewarding.
