This Week’s Story: We Are What We Eat

Caryl and I watched an indie movie last week that was filmed on location in Italy. Many scenes were shot in piazzas (plazas), bustling with people. Hundreds of ‘extras’ were captured in the background of the film, simply going about their business. And after seeing multitudes of these folks captured near and far by the cameras, we both noticed that not a single obese person was among them…..

Ranch News

That’s Scott on the JD backhoe dutifully stacking. And stacking… there’s 948 bales he’ll have picked up of bundled summer sunshine, and this is just on the North Ranch’s 230 acres. Each bale weighs in around 1350 lbs. Photo by Rebecca.

This is what Scott gets to look forward to. There’s a few more of those bales out there! Beyond those hay meadows rises the smoke-clad massif of the Continental Divide. Wildfire smoke is upon us, as with much of the Nation. Photo by Rebecca.

Peggy is our little orphan calf we picked up on the range. Born with only three legs, he’s getting around just fine! He’s become sort of a mascot for the ranch hands, and has moved in with them. They feed him milk 2x a day, and now, he even gets along the with the cow dogs…and is protected by the Great Pyrs! Photo by Glenn.

Clyde sometimes takes over the jeep. He’ll only let someone he knows very well drive; anyone else is just chopped liver to him! Photo by Glenn.

This is a satellite capture of our cowherd, high up in the wilds of Moose Creek. It’s around midnight when I grabbed this screenshot with my phone. The moon is nearly full this night, and although the aerial imagery of the grasslands and timber they graze was collected in daytime, in reality it is quite dark on Christmas Gulch where they are finding some great grass. These days can get pretty warm, even high up in the mountains of the range. This particular day was in the 80s, and all of them were bedded down, chewing cud, keeping activity down, staying cool. But at night they come alive in the moonlight, and just like the wild elk in the hills around them, they get their fill by grazing all night. Photo by Glenn.

It’s Annie and Justice, tearing through the deep green of the home ranch. The hay is exceptionally thick, and it means they can’t cut very fast! We were delayed by our cutting operations on the North Ranch, and as a result, this hay got more mature than we like. But one thing we learned about feeding hay that may be a little coarse: there’s no such thing as wasting it when you feed it back on your hay meadow! If the cows don’t eat it, all the soil micro and macrobiota will! And they will pay us back in spades…. Photo by Glenn,

There’s probably 200 head I captured in this pic off the shoulder of this peak we call the Beaverhead. You can’t see them all because of the tall sage; it hides green grass diversity in the shade of the sage, and these cattle scoop it up despite it still being in the 80s at the close of this day. Photo by Glenn.
