This Week’s Story: When Baseball Reigned
“We all had baseball teams. We played each other at our schools and had home games and away games.” Neighbor Jim Martiny was telling me about when he grew up on his family ranch in May, Idaho. He’s in his 70s now and is 4th generation in Idaho’s remote Pahsimeroi Valley. His great-grandfather was among a handful of first white settlers of this mountain-surrounded valley…..

Ranch News

We had some beautiful weather scenery as the clouds pulled back and the rain quit. This is Ethan and Abby’s homestead, just off of Alderspring headquarters.

The yearling and 2-year-old finish cattle are really digging the fall grass especially after a much-needed rain softened it up.

These quarter beef ribeyes are looking really good especially since these steers just came off the range and are only 16 and 1/2 months old. That means they’ll be both flavorful because of their very nice light marbling and tender because of their young age.

There’s almost 350 head of cattle in this little 2-acre paddock of tall stockpile that we held waiting for them as they came off the dry ranges. It’s been a long 35 mile walk home, and the 3 things they were needing were unlimited forage, close proximity to each other so that the moms could easily find all their babies and plenty of drinking water. All 3 were met…and then some.

That’s Rose standing on the middle of the center line astride her horse as the entire long trail of cattle (nearly a mile long now) crossed off Highway 93 to head up to the ranch from the Salmon river canyon.

That’s the entire Alderspring range herd coming off of the final part of the range along the Salmon River breaks. The river is between the camera and the cattle in that deep hole at the end of the green meadow.
