Ranch News

Range riders don’t only ride horses. Dirt bikes are a necessary tool on the range as we run cattle on 70 square miles of rough country. A trip from the ranch takes half the time on a dirt bike than it does in a four wheel drive pickup, saving hours per week in transit time, wear and tear, and fuel. Photo by Glenn.

Alderspring cattle are cruising the 2018 fire-blasted country of Big Hat Creek. Most of the trees are dead, but the understory is full of life in new trees, grass and tons of forbs. We’ve stayed off of it until it revegetated (some of it is still coming along). At this stage, the cows like it too! Photo by Glenn.

That’s daughter Linnaea, modeling a shirt she created as a complimentary gift for her clients. The artwork is by her sister, Becky. Linnaea and her husband Kaden started a new business as registered Idaho backcountry guides. This past week she took 6 gals high up to to our Cougar Rock cow camp where we got to bring them with us on 4 days of range riding. They loved it, and were so willing to help. Photo by Glenn.

These little calves are loving their own range water tanks. Nearby are the big tanks their moms drink out of, and this way they can get their very own water without getting trampled by 1300 lb mamas. The hotwire fence around their tank keeps the mamas out (they are trained by us to stay away from the hotwire), but the calves can fit under it (and plus it is a fake and not carrying any charge). Between Toby’s ears is Cougar Rock Camp, tucked into a remote canyon in the Hat Creek backcountry. You can spot the horses grazing in the meadow below the tents the crew and guests sleep in. Photo by Glenn.

We were blessed with a wonderful hay crop on the ranch this year. Hundreds of half-ton bales dot the big meadow on the home place. Summertime means a lot going on with Alderspring. Cattle are grazing far and wide, and the sound of haymaking often runs 24 hours a day to maximize quality for winter feeding. Photo by Glenn.
