This Week’s Story: The Storm of Flavor
There’s a storm on the range this year. The cow camp we are in right now was where the crew found their tents underwater 2 years ago after a cloudburst dumped buckets. But this year is one of the lowest precipitation years on record, so it isn’t rain. The storm is not hail, even though last week an icy hailstorm rained down on the crew, but it was only the second pelting storm this summer. This year’s storm is of a different kind…..

Even in summer, it can be really cold before daylight. Here’s Annie and Julian with a little lightweight down around them on the way to the cattle from camp. Photo credit Justice Mitchell.

We call this set of temporary tanks the “Justice Memorial,” named so after Justice, one of our star returning ranch hands who placed it on this remote ridge in the Texarkana part of the Little Hat Country. Photo credit Justice Mitchell.

Water tank placement is an important part of what we do. We usually place stock tanks in temporary locations on logging roads, thereby eliminating the possibility of new soil disturbance around water sources frequented by cows. Here, we just got to the place where we’ll place about 3000 feet of firehose line to an new tank setup for grazing the next day. Unfortunately, the sun is already down, and we didn’t get the water flowing until after midnight! Photo credit Melanie Elzinga.

After living in close backcountry quarters for most of the summer, usually with the same crew, these people from all walks of life and locations across the country usually get very close. They not only have work to do together; they share cookshack fare, work astoundingly long days, and almost always end up having each other’s back when nature and recalcitrant cattle dish out their worst. The cowboy is Justice and his dog is named Goose. Justice has been with us two seasons, while Goose is just a pup. He’s a cowdog for sure–a hybrid between a border collie, Aussie shepherd and a Pahsimeroi Shag–but he still has much to learn. Photo credit Melanie Elzinga.

This is Jed, originally from Colorado, but lately from Kansas. Jed is a jack of all trades; he’s worked on nearly every kind of farm machinery and has been an over-the-road semi truck driver and now rides on Alderspring’s range crew. Photo credit Melanie Elzinga.

Annie’s wearing raingear for good reason. On every day for 3 weeks, it would rain–sometimes downpour–in the afternoon. The crew welcomed the rain, as did the cows who would graze with wild abandon on the mountain forage, especially as the dry and brittle grass and forbs became soft and flavorful. I’d like to say that the crew eats incredibly wholesome food on the range, but it seems like everyone brings a little junk food in their saddlebags to keep things interesting. We all have our comfort foods that can sustain us when continuously uncomfortable–too cold, or too hot, or too wet, or too dry. Or just plain intensely sleep deprived. Here’s Sheldon from Colorado showing of his pretzel choice for the day! Photo credit Justice Mitchell.

As you likely figured out, dogs are a serious part of the crew. None of the dogs do it perfectly and have their own level of mischief, but for the most part, they are top hands and save us so much work on the ground herding cattle. Photo credit Melanie Elzinga.
