This Week’s Story: 100 Days, 600 Miles

“Are you sad that it’s almost over?” As we bumped our way on the 2-track out of the backcountry from our last cow camp, I was asking my 26-year-old, Linnaea, about coming off the range with the cattle in the next few days. She, along with our other daughters and some great crew members, has been one of the main driving forces up there in the high country, crew bossing and doing most of the route-finding to new camp locations. It’s been a challenging summer. There’s been some exceptionally rough and remote mountain country we’ve never grazed before, and the weather has been tempestuous, to put it mildly…..

Ranch News

It’s Aspen Camp, high up in the Big Hat Country. In the trees you can see a scattering of tents that are the home-away-from-home for the crew. They live up here for a week at a time, and then they come down, take some days off and work on the ranch. After a week off the range they go back for another week on.

Nearly 500 head take an afternoon siesta. There’s water tanks by that big tree– but they’re not by the creek. We just put a portable pump by the creek to protect that critical riparian habitat and run some temporary pipe to a quick water tank placement. The whole thing takes about 45 minutes to set up; our cattle get super clean water and a creek stays pristine. We’ll probably stop using this as a lunch break spot in just 3 days.

During high summer, clean water means life to all of us. Lactating cows need a lot of water to keep that Milk Bar going. Their babies generally depend on Mama for all their hydration when they’re young. These cowhands drink right out of that pipe because it comes out of the crystal clear waters of Big Hat Creek. Horses obviously need a drink to do the important work they do all day as well as the cow dogs. Water is the Gathering Place.

That’s Jessica, our US Forest Service range manager measuring a tributary of little hat Creek where we just finished grazing last week. With our herding techniques our cattle generally don’t go down in the creeks to graze, and as a result, there’s an impressive array of woody regeneration complemented by healthy understory vegetation. The monitoring crew seems happy–I think it’s because it’s unusual in the West to have creeks unimpacted by cows.

Grazing plan maps can get pretty stacked by the end of the week. Because crew bosses check them every day they’re able to interpret the various squiggles. The thing that’s worth pointing out on this map is that all the AM grazing passes are facing south and southwest. All the afternoon grazing passes are on slopes facing north and northeast. We’ve found that the cattle do better when we regulate their grazing by temperature and sun exposure. North slopes run cool, south slopes can get hot in the afternoon.
