This Week’s Story: The Currants of Hat Creek

About midway across the span of Little Hat Ranch, along the north banks of the bubbling creek, steep and broken desert hills cascade down to the impenetrable willow thickened swamps inhabited by beaver. These abrupt foothills are cloaked with mountain big sage and greasewood, bluebunch wheatgrass and an occasional desert mountain mahogany. They are in fact brittle and inhospitable rocks with desert dirt—volcanic ash–thrown on them, and when the midsummer sun beats on them, they are a convection oven…..

Ranch News

So this pic was just taken a few hours ago. I was scouting out new grass and water possibilities when I spotted a bunch of the Alderspring herd peppered on that middle ridge enjoying the cooler hours of dusk. Photo by Glenn.

Here’s a screenshot of the Alderspring herd on my phone just a few minutes ago…you can see there’s a very nice scatter in both open country and timber. This is a wonderful distribution of cattle on their current paddock crossing a diversity of plant community types to maximize the wellness of our beeves. Photo by Glenn.

And this is what’s been going on at headquarters. Nearly 200 acres of hay laying down, drying in the warm summer sun getting ready to put in a bale. Photo by Glenn.

It’s Chris Hayek and his mount, Tari. This is Chris’s third season on Alderspring. He came to his first as an intern….now, he’s a crew boss. Photo by Glenn.

Breakdowns come in all shapes and sizes whenever you’re running any sort of equipment old or new! This is what the back end of a swather looks like after the wheel literally fell off! Photo by Glenn.

If you think Carson looks sad stepping out of his swather it’s because he is. Carson started out as an intern this summer and now has graduated to a full-time Ranch Hand. The wheel fell off while he was running the Old Reliable New Holland 1116, and he had to quit cutting this day as a result. He says he likes swathing hay! Photo by Glenn.

It’s the Alderspring horse herd right above Cow Camp this last week. Photo by Glenn.

Those are Ben’s ears I’m looking through on this shot. This is the Skull Flats herd who were about to join with the rest of the herd now just a mile away. The Skull Flats bunch was some of the last to calve on the open range, so we handled them quiet and slow as the calves got a few days of life on them and learned how to walk with the rest of the herd.
