This Week’s Story: The Arrowhead and the Pearl
It was a hunter who first picked it up, and he probably was a resident of the Hat Creek country itself. The year is anyone’s guess, but it may be as early as when the last sheets of mountain ice left the Rockies—over 10,000 years ago……

Over 400 head of collars–one for each of all the range cattle. These will all tune into a Starlink signal, so we’ll be able to know exactly where they are at all times and create virtual fencing boundaries! More on this later! Picture by Glenn.

It’s raining baby calves right now on the range! There’s one full-time person living with them all the time in a remote cow camp. Today it’s been Glenn, and it’s his seventh day and night at “Night Owl Spike Camp.” Picture by Glenn.

Melanie spotted this orphan twin up on the range. Since range mamas don’t count well in big country we almost always pull one of the babies off that gets left behind. It just so happened a couple days later this Angus mama lost her baby. Glenn skinned the lost calf and hung the fur coat on the orphan calf so that his new mama would think it was him (Cows identify by scent far more than sight). This doesn’t always work, but this time it did! Picture by Glenn.

There’s a lot of hot wire and a lot of packing gear that goes into a range camp, because the paddocks that we put the cattle in are large; some are as much as 300 acres. Picture by Glenn.

Here’s intern Carson adjusting the pack saddle on Robin that is carrying miles of fence gear. Picture by Glenn.

The range cows always get some of the best views. Picture by Glenn.

Winter came back with a vengeance this past week with a lot of wind and high altitude snow! Picture by Glenn.
