This Week’s Story: Change On the Peace Trail
“Clyde. ELK! Now.” The back of the SUV erupts. I can hear his nose hit the window. “You see them?” Tail wags. Eyes, nose pointing tensed to a quivering focus on the object:
A herd of elk in the distant meadow, about a half mile away……

Ranch News

A little bit of snow up high and rain down low transformed the ranch this week! Photo by Glenn.

Sometimes, storms rest on our summer grass ranges. For me, I can feel the provision in my heart. Photo by Glenn.

The first flowers are hitting the range this week! It’s the short-leaved Phlox, the tiny harbinger of coming grass! Photo by Glenn.

Our native desert grasses are coming on! This one is bluebunch wheatgrass. It can thrive in single digit precip zones! Photo by Glenn.

This cloud formation was even more awesome in person! As for all of the tall grass in the foreground? It covers a serpentining berm established years ago for a very specific purpose.
The creek uphill of the ranch is generally a tiny stream that shrivels to nothing during the hot months of the year. But occasionally we’ll get enough rain in the watershed that the creek will grow hundreds of times its normal size and flood down toward the ranch. It’s happened three times since we’ve been living here, if my memory serves.
The berm slows the flow of torrent so it doesn’t rip down through our field, damaging topsoil and vegetation as it flows. We’ve let the grass grow tall on the berm as an extra precautionary measure.
The grass holds the soil in place to prevent a flash floods from carrying a lot of it away. And it looks beautiful beneath a stunning cloud formation like this one! -Melanie

Here at Tendoy we have some new arrivals! Kittens arrived four weeks ago, and last night these little ones made their appearance. 9 pups in all! -Rebecca

Kittens, and puppies, and soon goslings! Our mama goose, Ember, is currently brooding a clutch of eggs. Her mate, Smoke, stands diligent guard nearby day and night running off anyone who gets too close. I took this photo over the garden fence to avoid his wrath. -Rebecca

So many things are budding early this year thanks to the abnormally warm winter and spring we’ve had. The last several days, though, have brought us rain and snow here at Tendoy, and we are grateful for every bit of it to nourish the new growth beginning to emerge.
