This Week’s Story: Unleashing a Genie
Soil agroecologist Nicole Masters, daughter Melanie and I were standing on the windswept shoulder of a peak high up on our Hat Creek grazing ranges that a precipitous and narrow jeep trail meandered over. Before and just below us was the sweep of Bear Basin, an unbroken 15 square mile bowl of coursing green grass and sage. Dotted like pepper in one edge of the bowl was our herd of Black Angus beeves…..

Buster and I went on a trail run up the canyon behind the ranch, and we scared up a few elk ranging over the hillsides! -Melanie

The view from our trail run! I’m trying to get back in running shape, and Buster definitely needs to work on his fitness too before herding cattle up in the mountains this summer. -Melanie

Another herd of elk we came across on our run. Pretty cool to see so many at once. There were some good-sized bulls in there! -Melanie

Spring has finally come to our valley, and that means it’s time to get horses tuned up for a summer on the range! On the left is Johnny, who is my horse. I’m excited to give him a job this summer! And on the right is Elle, who I started last summer. She’ll continue to advance in her training over the coming months, and likely be offered for sale this fall. -Melanie Photo credit Melanie Elzinga.

Last week we ran new underground electrical wire to two of the three pivots on the Tendoy ranch. Here the dozer is making a first pass to loosen the soil while we prep the wire to pull. Without the the irrigation infrastructure that this will power, this ground would just be another sagebrush flat. -Scott

It turned out to be fairly rigorous work feeding the heavy conduit with the wire inside into the ripper shank that buried it roughly 34 inches in the ground. Everyone was sore the next day from pulling and pushing to keep it from binding up as it went in. -Scott

I spent three years running heavy equipment here in the valley, and it is still crazy to watch an enormous bulldozer drag this nine foot tall ripper shank through our often rocky soil. Thanks to all the work that everyone put in, we will be able to continue growing the beautiful high mountain grasses that nourish our beeves. -Scott

We are starting to see the velvety flush of spring all around as little green leaves slowly overpower the yellow stalks of winter. Even with warm, sunny days there is still lots of snow blanketing the peaks that flank the valley. Those snowy peaks hold the promise of water for this summer as over the next several months the snowpack in the high mountains melts and trickles down to the valleys below. Photo credit Abby Kelly.

The aurora borealis showed up the other night! Photo credit Melanie Elzinga.
