This Week’s Story: The Range of Java
Cowboy coffee. It’s a thing. And it is a necessary fact of life and living on the range. I’ve tried making it at home. There, it is simply stupid. I mean, I’m surrounded by the trappings and gadgetry of home; Christmas gifts given of espresso machines and mocha pots, the Cuisinart, Ninja and even Mr. Coffee drip machines (which I am drinking from as I write this–please don’t judge me)…..

Ranch News

We got some rain in the valley on Tuesday night of this week, and snow up high. Wednesday morning we woke up to sunshine and a beautiful blanket of snow in the high country! Photo by Melanie.

Baby (Annie’s border collie dog) is very intelligent, but not quite to the level of loading hay with the backhoe. However, she does enjoy riding with Annie while loading for the next day of feeding. Photo by Annie.

Here’s Jed feeding the last of the hay to the pairs in the stockpile grass. Some of these photos seem repetitive, but that’s real life this time of year! For the last few weeks, Jed and I have been feeding cattle and doing chores every day. Winter on the ranch is a slower time, and there’s more rhythm to our days. Come summer, we’ll be back to the chaos! That’s one thing I like about ranching; the nature of the work is always changing in response to the seasons. -Melanie

The stockpile grass was so tall, it was over the backs of the cattle and nearly the feed truck! It was kind of fun to feed in it, but also a little nerve wracking not being able to see any ditches or bumps ahead of the truck. We just took it slow and hoped for the best! Photo by Melanie.

The mama cows and calves loved the stockpile grass that they grazed all last week. Stockpile is residual grass left over from the growing season that still retains some nutritional value and serves as a form of roughage. Photo my Melanie.

If not for the craggy, sagebrush-covered mountains in the background, the sheep under the heavy gray of a moisture-laden sky is almost reminiscent of the Scottish moors. But even though this isn’t Scotland, the sheep are doing great! Photo by Melanie.

I love this time of day when the last of the sun’s glow sets the mountains ablaze in brushstrokes of gold, deep blue, yellow, and orange. – Melanie

Tuesday of this last week was a beautiful, rainy day. While we haven’t gotten much snow this winter, rain is more than welcome! We actually prefer it to snow; rain soaks directly into the soil. Conversely, snow sits on top of the soil until it melts, and some of the moisture sublimates back into the atmosphere, or “burns off” under the sun. Photo by Melanie.

Glenn’s border collie, Clyde, has come feeding with us every day. Here he’s guarding the stock tanks. The border collie brain just can’t comprehend that cattle should be able to leave the herd for a drink, so Clyde does his best. Photo by Melanie.

The horses are still grazing for the most part, but we’ve been giving them a little bit of grass/alfalfa mix hay to supplement and balance their nutritional needs for protein and energy. Photo by Melanie.
