This Week’s Story: Just A Little Lost
I was actually glad the blizzard started again. Driving wind, gusting to something around 50 miles per hour blasted horizontal snow in my face. Upwind, I could barely hear the wolves howling. At least Melanie and Abby wouldn’t hear them again. They were buried under a mountain of loose clothing in my truck…..

Some more range flashbacks from years past!

June 2022. The cattle safely in the night pen after a good day of grazing in Deer Gulch. The crew unsaddles and gets ready for a well deserved supper and some sleep. Photo by Glenn.

July 2022. Glenn encountered an unplanned roadblock on a recon mission, looking for grass in the high country. It’s not uncommon to come across downed trees on these remote roads. Maintenance is limited and dead trees are constantly falling. Photo by Glenn.

July 2022. Annie, aboard Gatto, watches the cattle graze up into the mountain mahogany. She’s smiling, but no one on the crew was excited for this graze. Mountain mahogany is extremely thick, and just the right height to make riding through it nearly impossible. Photo by Glenn.

July 2022. Wild onions blanketing a rocky hillside above Moose Creek. They’re not only beautiful in bloom, but they make for pretty good seasoning when the camp cook forgot the minced onion at home! Photo by Glenn.

July 2022. This was the first year on the range for Toby (right) and Merry (left). Linnaea and Melanie rode them about 10 miles into cow camp, way up in Big Hat. By the time the two green horses got there, they had a lot of things figured out and were ready to go to work! Photo by Glenn.

June 2023. Annie and Reba keep watch over the herd while Jimmie takes the opportunity to graze a bit. The Lemhi Range spreads out before them, one of the most beautiful views on the range. Photo by Linnaea.

June 2023. Maddy came down early to make dinner for the crew this evening, the wall tent alight with lantern glow as the herd descends to the night pen in the background. Photo by Glenn.

August 2023. We pushed further into the uppermost high elevation reaches of the range this summer, looking for green grass during a drought. This stint was a hard one for the crew of Evan, Webb, Jed, Melanie, and Annie (left to right). They grazed thick timber and some of the toughest country we’ve ever encountered. They were feeling pretty lucky when the other crew showed up to switch them out, because that crew also dealt with rain that poured for three days straight! While we were so grateful for the moisture, it made for a bit of a suffer fest for the crew. Photo by Maddy.
