This Week’s Story: The Wild Ones
It was just Becky and I in the front, driving the long, dark road home from Salmon. My three little kids snored in their car seats in the back, rocked to sleep by the gentle motion of the car following the winding Salmon River…..

It’s the warmup crew. It was in the low teens where we went Christmas tree hunting this year, and this part of the crew was taking a breather and warming up by the fire! Picture by Glenn.

These guys came up to me while I was measuring brix, a measure of grass energy. It’s really important at this time of year to keep cattle warm and growing despite the settling in of the cold. Grass at their feet tested a record high of 25 this year despite single digit nights. It’s simply because there’s some green left to the grass, and the frost has the plants shut down from being able to translocate the sugar formed by photosynthesis. So it gets stuck there, and concentrates, resulting in some really powerful grass! Picture by Glenn.

These horses just have their heads down instead of enjoying that Alpenglow. I understand; they’ll want to get their bellies full to stay warm on the coming frosty night. Picture by Melanie.

That’s the high Lemhi Range marching up the valley from our cattle. It’s a string of 10 to 12,000 footers that runs over 100 miles. It’s pretty much untracked; there’s only two trails or two tracks over the entire length–and they are not easy going and impassable for 10 months a year (snow prevents passage). Very few people venture into the rugged range. Picture by Melanie.

This is where the Lemhi Range ends: Cronk’s Canyon. Melanie grabbed this shot in the moonlight of her car in the middle of the night. There’s a few of us who know of a secret hot spring along this stretch of road. I’m pretty certain she had stopped in for a soak in the 103 degree water! Picture by Melanie.

It’s the fall scatter. Our finish cattle get the luxury of bigger pastures when the grass stops growing. You don’t want to lay out too much grass–they’ll spend too much time walking. So it’s a balance. Picture by Melanie.

The horse string is shadowed by a snowstorm building up over the Pahsimeroi Ranges. Photo by Melanie.

Melanie grabbed this shot about halfway up our valley, just 18 miles from home this week while we headed up to find a Christmas Tree. It’s big country, and that part of the high Pahsimeroi is completely uninhabited, except by herds of wild elk and pronghorn antelope. Picture by Melanie.

Back home again along our own front yard of mountains. We never get tired of the view. Picture by Melanie.
