Welcome to Alderspring’s Weekend Newsletter. Thank you for partnering with us in what we do!

This Week’s Story: Coming Home for Christmas
It wasn’t Christmas yet, but it was dang close. The very next day would be Christmas Eve. My buddy Greg and I decided to grab Christmas trees for our families up on the Hat Creek Ranges this year because we both had little kids at home, and it was forecasted to be frigid cold. Normally, we bundle everyone up, drive as far as we can into the peaks, and hike up to find the perfect specimen for our home…..

Ranch News

It’s winter, and Ethan and Abby and kids were out feeding their ewes and rams on the shortest day of the year. They raised the organic alfalfa hay right on where they are feeding. Photo by Glenn.

Glenn snapped this shot of one of our trusty ranch trucks a few mornings ago. The combination of wood smoke, cloud and fog that accumulated in the frosty morning made things interesting! Photo by Glenn.

It’s the original 1870-80s homestead barn, and the origin of this year’s Christmas light string that stretches behind Glenn for several hundred yards. The barn is going on 150 years old, and still gets used as a cow milking spot and a shelter for “bottle” calves when they want to get out of the wind. Photo by Glenn.

The “big” house. The 7 daughters were raised in this home, constructed by the whole family and many, many hands. Glenn tallies over 50 people who worked on the house, made of lodgepole pine logs. The pallets up front that the lights are on protect Caryl’s eclectic collection of shrubs from scouring winds that can rip across the Alderspring meadows, whacking young shrubs with frosty windburn and frost damage. Here’s Scott pulling the twine from the first of the hay bales as he prepares to feed them out. Feeding cows on the North Ranch is a family affair. Scott pitches hay while Rebecca drives the feed truck and they both check the herd for condition and illness. Their three little kids help by trying to spot their favorite calves. As the winter nights turn cold, this hay buffet will keep these mama cows and calves warm, healthy, and productive! Photo by Rebecca Rains.
