Welcome to Alderspring’s Weekend Newsletter. Thank you for partnering with us in what we do!

This Week’s Story: The Dawn of Redwoods on Alderspring
In spite of the wave of violent destruction that tore through his country in the summer of 1941, Mr. T. Kan, a Chinese forestry professional, reflected in quiet awe as he gazed at the great coniferous tree next to the village temple in Modaoqi, a tiny hamlet in the Eastern Sichuan province of China…..

This is Myrtle. She’s one of the two corriente “wild” cows on Alderspring. She’s beautiful, but mean. She’s super protective of her kids, and has an uncanny awareness of where we go next. She’s a mind reader… Picture by Glenn.

We’re feeding some hay on the Tendoy, or North Parcel ranch. Cows and calves are really liking the green to mix with their grazing! Picture by Glenn.

Here’s some awesome deep green still on the grazing docket for this year. I’m guessing it will be Christmas dinner for the beeves. The tools are what I test brix with–the measure of sweetness in the grass–and the flashlight helps me read the meter in the low light of a cloudy night. This measurement was still a very healthy 12, a great reading for coming into winter pasture. Picture by Glenn.

Part of the yearling herd on the high terraces above the Pahsimeroi River. The march of the snowy Lemhi Range stretches for over 100 miles. Picture by Glenn.

It’s the Hat Creek Ranges. Midway up, you can see the “beaverhead,” a peak halfway up to the high country. We usually have cattle up around that peak in July. Now, it is blanketed with much needed snow. Picture by Glenn.

That’s me (Glenn) on the right with Bob Quinn, regenerative organic pioneer. We both spoke at the Montana Organic Association conference this week. I love speaking at these events because I always get to learn from people like Bob. He’s got a great book, Grain By Grain, that he was able to recently get in the hands of the US Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins. It’s a good read, and I think it helped the Secretary think differently about organic–and food. Picture by Glenn.

That’s Glenn, Maddy and Melanie on a fall ride on the range looking at plant regrowth following the start of fall rains! Very impressive! Picture by Annie.

It’s Maddy, still smiling in the rain, getting ready to move the yearling herd on lush fall grass. Picture by Annie.

Justice getting the “bottle babies” their latest take on milk. Both orphans, we’ve been working on raising them and being mom to them all summer. They are growing like the wind! Picture by Annie.

Range flashback: August, on the high burn country to Iron Mountain Creek, the herd is picking away at the lush grass found after a 2018 wildfire ripped across the mountainside. Picture by Annie.
