Welcome to Alderspring’s Weekend Newsletter. Thank you for partnering with us in what we do!

This Week’s Story: Why Cows are Called Dams
Drowning wasn’t a cause of death that I thought I’d ever have to deal with in beef cattle. I have had cows and calves go completely under water when sending the herd across the Salmon River at high water, but they all bobbed back up like corks, blowing snot out of their noses when they broke back to the surface (my horse I swam next to also went completely under, as did I). After all, it is really hard to plug your nose with hooves. We humans like to use our fingers for that…..

Glenn shot this pic after climbing one of our summer grazing range’s low peaks above the Salmon River. If it was April, chances are that the Alderspring herd could be seen one day trailing up from the river across the photo to the left, headed for high country.

Turning 90 degrees to the southeast, Glenn grabbed this pic for an unusual look up the long Pahsimeroi Valley. It is where headquarters are, about 9 miles distant up the 40 mile valley.

It’s just moss, rocks and plants you might say. But what is absolutely stunning about this picture is that the soil is completely covered–in a desert environment with around a 7 inch annual rainfall. Unlike most rangeland soils this one most likely never saw a cow traverse across it. It may have had native bighorns or occasional elk or deer walk across it and possibly graze, but it was never subjected to continual grazing brought on by 150 years of cows. Glenn found this on a ledge between cliffs on rangelands near where the pics above were taken. Glenn and Caryl are both convinced that these kind of range conditions are possible where cows are grazed–with long periods of rest, just as native grazers practiced. Photo by Glenn.

Melanie shot this pic while building a new grazing paddock for the beeves yesterday. We never get used to rainbows.

That’s Jed stringing hot wire, smiling under the rainbow. Photo by Melanie.

Melanie grabbed this shot of Alderspring beeves living easy…full bellied with abundant fall forage, and just before getting moved to new grass by Jed and Melanie.

Here’s a better shot of that grass the beeves were on… Photo by Melanie.

It’s Aubrey, in a flashback to range riding the big country this past summer. Aubrey was from Texas, and she really liked her sweet tea. Glenn tried in vain to convert her to cowboy coffee in cow camp, but she never budged! Photo by Melanie.

Glenn is on the North Ranch here, checking out the mother cows and their calves as they work thru the dry stockpile grass. Photo by Melanie.

It’s Maddy with her new colt, finally ready to work with. We spend quite a bit of time starting colts over the winter. A covered round pen in our stock barn helps quite a bit in the rains and snows of winter. Photo by Melanie.

It’s Annie working on her colt start. Most of the work involves only one core value: building trust. Photo by Melanie.

Just joined and noticed most everything is “sold out” (which speaks volumes our your quality) and was wondering is there a certain day or time when best to order
Thank you, John
Hi, John! Welcome! We restock every Wednesday, and send out a sale flyer Wednesday evening with the week’s deals. That is usually the best day to order if you are trying to get a specific item before it’s sold out.
Wonderful photographs.

Great calf almost-drowning mama rescued story!
