This Week’s Story: All is Safely Gathered In
The fall colors on the Range had waxed and waned; the cold began to seep in, first imperceptibly, then, with abandon to where it was hard to keep warm in the saddle. An Arctic breeze would snake its way down from the rocky tundras of the highest part of our summer Range. Every so often, when we broke the crest of a ridge, we could see the brilliant white of the snow crusted massif called Taylor Mountain…..

Ranch News

The first real snow hit the peaks last week as you can see pretty clearly in this shot of Alderspring’s headquarters. The ranch infrastructure and ranch hand housing are on the right. The family home is on the left. Picture by Glenn.

There’s several hundred yearlings on this pasture, but the grass is short and slowly going dormant, so the spread is big. The nutrition is still very high, concentrated by fall frosts. Picture by Glenn.

It’s our valley under a time exposure from the summit of nearby peak, Mama Bear. The nearest valley lights are the ranch. Picture by Glenn.

The alpenglow makes it look like southern Utah, but it’s just finishing beeves on Alderspring. Picture by Melanie.

Scattered beeves on Alderspring’s lower lease ranch. The soft and warm light of Autumn is often stunning. Picture by Melanie.

The northern lights have been lighting our way from the sky nearly every night this week, but the Pleiades still shines through (middle right center). Picture by Melanie.

The color can be pretty stunning when the Aurora paints the sky. Picture by Melanie.

In the short days of fall, Melanie often finds herself working out in the dark, still moving cattle, checking water and stringing fences. She gets to see things that go shine in the night more than many of us. Picture by Melanie.

Alderspring Headquarters is just over that mountain range. This shot is of most of the mama cow herd with their calves on the North Ranch, along the Continental Divide near the Montana border. It’s also certified organic, and now is finally productive after 5 years turning it around. Picture by Melanie.

Scott and Rebecca have been tending the North Ranch all summer, and grew some of the tallest grasses we’ve ever had the privilege of grazing our beeves on. Some of this is pretty cured out, but eventually, with protein supplementation of organic alfalfa hay, they will get through it. In the meantime the tall grass provides a wonderful windbreak for the 6 month old calves. Picture by Melanie.
