Welcome to Alderspring’s Weekend Newsletter. Thank you for partnering with us in what we do!

This Week’s Story: Follow the North Star
It was cold and lonely at midnight in October. The range was dead quiet after exhaling its last deep breath of fall. It was a decisive switch to full on senescence—dormancy after the frantic production of high-altitude shortness of a 60-day summer…..

The mama cows and calves are currently grazing fall pasture under the watchful eye of Scott and Rebecca. While this forage might look dry and unappetizing, there is plenty of green graze remaining in the understory, protected from declining temperatures and hard frosts by the residual above. -Melanie

The cows are all individuals, and some are a little watchful of a human interloper. While walking through the herd, this mama cow kept a close eye on me. -Melanie

Some of these mama cows are getting on in age, so we monitor their body condition score constantly to ensure they aren’t losing weight going into the winter. Body condition score (or BCS) is an industry standard scale with ratings from 1 to 9, where 1 is emaciated and 9 is extremely fat. Moderate BSC (5 or 6) is ideal, and this cow is a good example of that! -Melanie

My primary task was to match calves to our list of tag numbers, denoting their color, whether they’re a steer or heifer, and any other pertinent identifying factors. I walked through them for quite a few hours! It’s very rewarding to see these calves so big and healthy coming into the winter months. -Melanie

Fall is a good time to get caught up on projects put on the back burner with simply not enough hours in the day during the summer! Here’s Maddy working with her little two-year-old filly, Marnie. She’s saddled Marnie a few times, and is just about ready for the first ride. -Melanie

Here’s Maddy’s little two-year-old, Marnie, packing a saddle around for the first time. Maddy won’t ride her much until she’s three and has had a chance to mature a bit, but plans to put a few easy rides on her this fall before Marnie gets the winter off to grow! -Melanie

Maddy really enjoys working with colts, as you can see! It’s so rewarding to witness a young horse gain confidence and figure out what you’re asking of them. I love it, too. -Melanie Photo credit Melanie Elzinga.
