Welcome to Alderspring’s Weekend Newsletter. Thank you for partnering with us in what we do!

This Week’s Story: The Days are Short, the Time is Long
This week’s story is from Abby, our second oldest daughter. She is a lover of plants and nurturing, of comfort and caring.
You first notice the color change. Lush greens are fading to brown, the green color trickling down out of the tops of the grass and down into the roots. You can still see green, if you walk around and pick up a handful of grass, a bouquet mix of orchard grass, clover, alfalfa, sainfoin, and bluegrass. Looking out across the pasture, the grass is bent over, wind tousled, like a toddler’s hair. I know. I have a toddler…..

Ranch News

That sheep band is growing! Our humble herd of 30 sheep from last year has grown significantly this summer! Ethan and Abby, who are the shepherds of this flock, said that the lambs look really good, and now are almost as large as their mothers after being born this spring! Photo credit Rose Morris.

Ella starts the herd out in the cool of early morning light on the shoulder of Iron Mountain. Photo credit Melanie Elzinga.

Justin comes to us from Texas A&M, and here rides herd in the upper Hat Creek country. Photo credit Melanie Elzinga.

Jed came to us from Kansas, and here brings the herd out of Trapper springs. Photo credit Melanie Elzinga.

The colors are coming to the High Country, especially in the aspen. Glenn shot this view of upper Trail Creek this week.

This is a view of Alderspring headquarters in the high Pahsimeroi Valley. The main ranch house is on the left and the bunkhouse, barn and ranch buildings are on the right. Grouse Creek Mountain, behind the ranch, rises to over 11,000 ft. In another week or two it will almost certainly be mantled with snow that will last until next summer. Photo credit Glenn Elzinga.

Space…the final frontier! And it’s finally being realized in Alderspring’s new fulfillment warehouse! It’s more space than we know what to do with right now, but it’s allowed us to almost triple our freezer space (that’s the white structure on the left), and give us plenty of room to spread out with our systematic packing system that eventually leads your orders on a conveyor to a waiting UPS truck. It’s the green grass of the home ranch, and it’s especially a great contrast to the dry desert ranges that surround our lush valley. It’s here where our cattle come off the range absolutely prepared nutritionally by the incredible diversity on the high and wild ranges. They hit these wonderful lush pasture grasses that we curated for much of the summer just in preparation for their return. The beeves gain fantastic weight in the fall on this grass, laying up fat deposition that results in fine marbling. The grass creates heart healthy fats that perform not only well for the cattle, but also for your table. Photo credit Glenn Elzinga.

It’s not every day that most of the Alderspring Elzinga daughters can gather together (oldest daughter Melanie was visiting a friend in Kansas). Caryl grabbed this shot of most of us at a picnic a couple weeks ago, where everybody cleaned up quite nicely. So many of you newsletter readers have watched our kids grow up, so I thought you’d like to see what they’re turning into; I’ve got to say, I’m pretty proud of them. -Glenn

We have been buying beef from you for years and in last two years can’t get any filets only the 16 oz ones and they are far and few. Please let us know what has happened. We always bought a lot of filet mignonette from you.
Hi George! Yes, supplies are tight. For our organic line of beef we just sell what we ourselves raise, so we’re limited in what we can put in the store. We added some straight grassfed from calves purchased from neighbors last year, and some from our son-in-law, and some of our customers enjoy the added option. A little tip for an old customer: we update quantities every Wednesday afternoon, so that’s the time to check for filets 🙂 -Caryl
I loved seeing the fun photo of your girls………next time in a caption list there names in order of the line up…….GREAT PHOTO GLENN
The blessing of a family of this sort has got be karmic built on morality lived in prior lives (by both parents and children). Wonderful to behold. Thank you for your contributions to mankind.
