Welcome to Alderspring’s Weekend Newsletter. Thank you for partnering with us in what we do!

This Week’s Story: From Hot Dish to Hat Creek
It was 1985, and it was raining. Hard. And spitting snow. Kneeling in the muck on a slope so steep that as I knelt, my feet began to lose purchase on the ground and I quickly reached into my near-frozen bag of trees for a Douglas-fir seedling. I put aside my hoedad, the trademark tree planting hoe that would become my indefatigable iron partner over the next few weeks of late May, and excavated my rock strewn hole…..

Flashback from the range. Early last spring, in the low country, grass density is light and spread out; as a result, Alderspring cattle are light and spread out! Photo by Melanie.

Maddy rides herd in the beginning of the high timber, on day 35 of the season’s range tour. Photo by Melanie.

Annie and crew bring the herd into the “Lake District” of the range. It is subalpine country, and the timber gets thick. The herd seems thrilled with the new plant diversity the high country presents. Photo by Melanie.

In May, the crew and cattle find themselves high on the Salmon River Breaks. It is canyon country, and the hills are steep, often breaking into cliffs and rockslides. In the middle of all that rock is some of the best grass on earth. Photo by Melanie.

The crew brings the herd into the night ground in Bear Basin. It will be dark soon, and as always, the team is exhausted and ready for some “grub” and a bunk in their bedrolls in their range tents. Photo by Melanie

At sunrise, the crew is already out on the “graze” with the cattle. Photo by Melanie.

Books are the thing when the cattle slow down and “park” while chewing cud! Photo by Melanie.

Sunset means it is time to head back to camp. The cattle are safely bedded down right next to the crew after grazing all day. They get trained and know where their current nomadic home is and hurry to their bedding ground! Photo by Melanie.

June snowstorms are a thing. The crew visits while the cattle bed down. The cattle love the cool, but when the crew set out this morning, driving snow was upon them. Warm ground kept it from accumulating, but the peaks beyond show that accumulation was real at high elevations. Photo by Melanie.
