This Week’s Story: When King Quits Crown

“Push me up!” Susan scowled from her perch, halfway up the ladder to the high seat on the hay wagon. She was fairly heavy, and her skin-tight oversize western jeans created a fairly intimidating view of her backside, hanging precariously in mid-air. She was stuck there and couldn’t quite get enough traction to launch her abundant figure up the next long rung on the ladder…..

Ranch News

Alderspring cattle on the North ranch at the foot of the Bitteroot/Beaverhead range that forms the backbone of the Continental Divide. Photo by Glenn.

The North ranch generally gets a little more precip than our home ranch. The fog was just pulling back this morning before sunup. These curious calves have never been to the home ranch, except inside their mamas. They are bound for home in just 2 days! Photo by Glenn.

The trusty Yamaha dirt bike hooked up to hot wire! Glenn often sidesteps the time consuming task of rolling up hot wire fence, and instead drags it a half mile across the ranch to new paddocks for redeployment. It’s very light, and with its polyester braided twine configuration, tows easily behind the bike. Photo by Glenn.

Max, the up and coming Great Pyrenees pup will be tasked with guarding both sheep and humankind. The humans he will guard are little ones–grandkids–who will start wandering wayward from Grandma and Papa’s house. They’ll need a guardian with them as they head out across the big meadows to run off any moose, mountain lions, wolves or bears (we have had all within a few hundred feet of the house). So Max gets to bond with them as they play in the big house basement. He gets pretty accustomed to the toy chaos that can reign, along with their loud antics. Photo by Glenn.

Melanie grabbed this shot of Max looking regal in the backyard. He’s already tougher than he looks! Photo by Melanie.

There’s big snowy country out there! Right now, mountain snowfall for the season is 135% of normal. I think I can hear the land breathing a sigh of relief after this year’s prolonged drought! Photo by Melanie.

Even the mid elevation country is getting cloaked with snow, but the thickly forested river bottoms still sport some green! Photo by Melanie.

Flashback to this summer. Despite the drought, some of the high elevation meadows still had excellent green grass! Photo by Melanie.

Flashback to an old friend: Jingle. He is as wild-spirited as he looks. Unforgettable he will always be, and one of the closest horse friends that Glenn has ever had. He caused his share of runaways, to be sure, but he always had our hearts…and we had his. He came to trust us, but no-one else. Some strangers he was not fond of; I think they had some sort of smell about them. He once tried to run a newspaper reporter over with a 3 ton loaded hay wagon. We’ve never seen him return to the Alderspring spread! Jing, as we called him, was an unforgettable king who held court over every horse and most humans. His wild eye would search for fear and often find it. He would also search for respect and trust. He always found the former in us; but the latter, he had to earn.

And he did.

This week’s tome is about him, so dear reader, if you have a minute, come and meet the Jing in this week’s long read! Photo by Melanie.
